Each week our contributors shed some light upon their favorite goings-on in the music realm. Here’s what we like to call our “Weekly Round-Up”:

1.) Will:

Super vibed by Beautiful Swimmers’ new release this week, Son, and profile and cover story in Washington City Paper. Also interesting to see Jay-Z strong arm the RIAA into changing their rules regarding platinum status and free, sponsored digital downloads. Go Hova. Hopefully there will be some trickle down on that sponsor money to, you know, artists who aren’t already rich and sitting next to the Prez at inauguration

2.) Harry:

After the fairly recent write-up about people buying followers and padding their listener numbers à la digital-age payola, and then the uproar of the service that is producing tracks for consumers to re-sell or present as their own work, then that whole Arty & Mat Zo story, it was interesting to see an upstart in the bass realm get called out for antics.

Looking forward to grabbing Midland’s debut release on his own label Graded, “Archive” and “Real Time“ both ticking all the boxes. And then the recent Metalheadz show on Rinse FM ft. Goldie, Jubei & SP:MC, and Icicle’s recent Rinse FM show with Distance round out my need for drum’n’bass and techy dubstep.

3.) Rafeena:

To say I’ve been anticipating any and all news about the Four Tet/Omar Souleyman collab would be a huge understatement.  I grew up with his music filling my childhood home and his venture into the indie and western music realm in recent years has been a really rad cross-section of my younger and present lives.  (And in case you’re wondering, he worked with Bjork on Biophilia, contributed to the Gorillaz Plastic Beach, and was selected by Caribou to perform at the ATP Nightmare Before Christmas festival.)  The world got it’s first snippet from the album when Hebden played the Lente Kabinet festival in Amsterdam last week. The clip is pretty tight and if the rest of the album is anything like this minute and thirty three seconds, it’ll be freaking awesome.

Also on my radar this week is the enigmatic Ten Walls. Not much is known about the producer yet, not even his full name, but he’s released an EP entitled Gotham on Innervisions and it’s generating lots of buzz.  Hopefully he’ll emerge from the shadows with some more tracks soon but for now, check out Gotham.

4.) Stephen:

Caught a glimpse of what Nine Lives has to offer in the near future with this preview of his new track “Hooked”:

Enjoyed this funky, deep house mix from Jaguarr:

5.) Caleb:
I’m still stuck on DJ Koze’s “Magical Boy (feat. Matthew Dear).” Between the sound design, light feel, and general weirdness of Matthew Dear sounding like a crazy frog-man in a cartoon forest, it’s a great time. I’ve also been listening to Hackman’s upcoming single “Fists of Ham.” There’s a cool blend of textures between the synths and string instruments that suits the vocalist well and gives the whole track an airy aura.

6.) Charles:

Super excited for the launch of South London Ordnance’s label Aery Metals and its inaugural release by the man himself, He Do The Police In Different Voices. He’s giving away a free track, “Modular Splash,” which might just be his best to date.

Also of note was Ben UFO & Four Tet’s b2b Rinse FM show–lots of bizarre classics and stellar new jams.Have to say the highlight of the week, though, was the unveiling of Paleman’s latest tune, “Admiral.” The young lad just never ceases to impress.

Pitchfork covered Gold Panda in a majorly entertaining edition of its 5-10-15-20 feature. While the idea of 5-10-15-20 is to share the music important to the artist at each of these ages, Gold Panda digresses into a mini autobiography about growing up in a dangerous neighborhood, scamming credit card companies and working at a sex shop.  Also, “All is Well…,” a mystical and spacey track from Ras G’s upcoming album Back on the Planet , is up to stream on Soundcloud. Back on the Planet is set to release on August 12 on Brainfeeder.
