L.A. based producer Matt Lange continues to tread into dark waters. A while back, we covered his phenomenal rework of Nine Inch Nails’ “Discipline,” but since then, the recent Mau5trap signee has been hard at work on his first full-length, Ephemera, which is due out in September. Looking to continue his exploration into territories that are raw, emotive, and intense, Lange has revealed “My Love Aside” as our first glimpse into what we can expect from Ephemera.
Moody and melancholic, “My Love Aside” opens with a backdrop which is intricate, ghostly, and draws listeners in like moths to a flame. This is Lange at his best: creating deft soundscapes that are intelligent, precise, and ‘real’ all while taking listeners into the expanses of his mind, his vision, and the stretches in between. And by the time the track begins to float like a phoenix resurrected – thanks in no small part to a series of airy notes that top off the track like whipped cream on fresh fruit – Lange shows that, as a tastemaker, his capabilities are more than just production. He’s a storyteller masquerading as a musician masquerading as a DJ. If this is what we can expect from the rest of Ephemera next month, we might just have a masterpiece on our hands.
