Lokiboi, “1991”

Not incredibly well known here in the States, but a staple on UK dance radio, Capital XTRA DJ Coco Cole has a penchant for spotting diamonds in the rough: the kind of tracks that effortlessly vibe without condescension or a self-imposed need to dumb it down for the dancefloor. That said, it comes to no surprise that she has released a free compilation, Say Yes: Volume 1, curated by hers truly and featuring talent that spreads itself across the dance music spectrum.

While all the tracks on the compilation are well worth their weight in gold, the one track that seems to stand out is Lokiboi‘s “1991.” Built from the skeleton of a Chicago house sound, this London based DJ pays tribute to the act of jacking one’s body via synth stabs, the use of the immortal sample from Lyn Collins’ “Think,” and enough pads and tambourine slammed into a 4/4 kick to make the pool party crowd lose their knickers. In other words, if Lokiboi wanted us to feel like the club scene did in ’91 when the DJ dropped fire on the turntables, his track “1991” certainly does the trick.
