Deep Sessions DC: A Deep Movement

“Our Mission is to educate with BassWeight. To show how we perceive music. To show others what they can experience and that there are other styles of Dubstep than what they’ve been exposed to. Deep Sessions wants to enlighten the public!” –Deep Sessions DC founder Jason ‘Encryption’.

For over a decade, Dubstep has been an ever-growing phenomena in the electronic world. Although it might be difficult to pinpoint its birth, one could argue that the genre began to see its earliest stages of development in 1998. Developed from a dark garage sound with origins of Drum & Bass and Brokenbeat, all inspired by the Jamaican sound system dance scene, Dubstep exponentially grew in popularity in numerous UK clubs and quickly came to dominate London’s underground nightlife. Fast forward to the present, Dubstep has provided influences from all over, including tracks on the Top 40 charts and endless sub-genres, all the while creating a mainstream commercial demand.

However, right here, in the nation’s capital, Dubstep is more than just a genre, it’s a movement. A movement of deep-roots and an organic sound that is so strong it has created history, an intense demand, and, most importantly, a family.

Starting in 2005, parties such as Shock Out and Bump’n Fresh created the foundation of Dubstep here in DC with the help of some talented locals known as Greg ‘Whighzeguy’ Dillion, Jason ‘Encryption’, Bryan ‘SGNL’ Johns, Dave Q., Alter Ego, and of course America’s Dubstep Ambassadors Joe Nice and Ricky Ricardo. Also setting the tone in Bass music, DC’s very own Eighty Eight/FORWARD crew, Graham Jackson and David Fogel, set massive boundaries with international bookings and vibes, creating an everlasting impact on the growth of bass music in DC. This all leading up to the birth of Deep Sessions.

“I’ve had the idea for many years, mostly a pipe dream without putting it into motion, until going up to NYC for Reconstrvct and really experienced what Deep Dubstep should be like. It was all about the vibe and sound. No lasers or gimmicks, just a dark room with some candles lit and an amazing sound system.”

With Reconstrvct being another inspiration, Jason teamed up with talented Gabriel ‘Refugee’ Galang and Greg ‘Whighzeguy’ Dillion, creating the first Deep Sessions at Sweet Spot DC, showcasing local talent. From that moment on, Deep Sessions DC started an evolution of deep rooted music. Expanding its crew by bringing in one of the finest MCs in the nation, MC Twisty and a rare musical gem, Sama ‘Instagib.’
