Bearcubs, “Paper Walls”

Trill, trap, ethereal. Following in the footsteps of artists like James Blake and FKA twigs, London’s Bearcubs has been producing esoteric pop-electronica for some time now. With a calming quality fit for the lounge or late night make-out sessions in a dark booth somewhere, Bearcubs has managed to invent a signature style via releases such as “Touch” and “Let Go” which both drew on themes of intimacy, soul, and atmosphere.

His latest release, “Paper Walls,” is an extension of this aesthetic as it starts from a detuned organ pattern and Jack Ritchie’s pained, crooning vocals and lifts into an intricate array of snares, kicks, and hi-hats which flow through speakers like rivers of wine. This track is a well executed example of sensuality translated to music and, even more so, the importance of sometimes having to strip down in order to deliver a more authentic sound. It’s hard to showcase vulnerability in electronic music, especially with the stigma of how loud, brash, and in your face it can be; but with a release like “Paper Walls,” that façade quickly fades and, for that, Bearcubs needs to be the soundtrack for your next romantic night in.
