Making their first splash on the DJ scene with a bootleg Madonna edit, these two UK producers have an impressively long resume of remixes under their belts, not to mention the serious amount of cool they’ve amassed simply through their association and success with James Murphy’s uber-hip DFA Records. When standouts (and a couple of my personal favorites) like Holy Ghost! and Groove Armada have come calling for Mock & Toof‘s services, it’s a pretty good indication that these dudes are the real deal. Their new album largely abandons the traditional dance-floor genre mash-ups in favor of a more eclectic and offbeat disco record, calling inspiration from a wide array of sources. They channel deep house, funk, David-Byrne-esque post punk, and whimsical pop. They’re not afraid to sprinkle their disco-concoctions with the chimes and clangs of guitar, plenty of vocals, and a mysterious psychedelic chic that gives their record a laid-back coolness, even while inspiring you to dance and groove. Released on their own record label Tiny Sticks, Tuning Echoes is definitely worth checking out. And if coolness can travel by process of osmosis, it might be worth your while to pick up a physical copy. Or buy it electronically here. Enjoy.
