The powerhouse vocals of Amy Douglas have been featured on many a dance track, with producers such as Eli Escobar, Juan Maclean and Kon combining their disco and house smarts with her singing talents. But as any talented collaborator should, she gets the chance to shine on her own as well. She does just that on her latest release “Never Saw It Coming,” which is presented both in its original form as well as in a remix and dub package from producer Crooked Man.
The original is a strikingly unique tune. It is a slow groover that combines the dark-edged arpeggiated synths that DFA releases are known for with a vocal from Douglas that oozes both sass and class. Meanwhile, the remix from Crooked Man adds a slinky backbeat and funky guitar sample, while the dub expands on the chorus, utilizing synth pads that are light as a feather, but have the ability to create a slightly spooky atmosphere.
