Portugal’s capital city of Lisbon has recently been a hotspot for emerging talent. PrÃncipe Discos has released a series of excellent singles, the vinyl versions adorned with hand painted covers that sell out quickly. Similarly, Warp Records released a three part series titled Cargaa that cast a spotlight on Lisbon’s new squad of producers. The new sound of Lisbon stems from Kuduro, a combination of rhythms from Angola that Portuguese producers have fused with European electronic music signifiers. Lit City Trax has just released DJ Do Ghetto, a compilation of tracks by pioneering Kuduro producer DJ N.K. who has familial roots in both Angola and Portugal. “Punched Horn”, one of many album highlights, combines blasts of brass samples with Kuduro’s galloping uptempo rhythm, woodblock drum fills, and dub siren effects.
