Crooka, “Birdy”

Reminiscent of jacking beats coming out of labels like Dirtybird and Hot Creations, Calgary’s Crooka is a name that’s brand new, but not one to pass on. Already getting support from the White Noise crew in Vancouver and opening for artists such as Klangkarussell, Bixel Boys, and Justin Jay, Crooka will no doubt be on our radar in the coming months.

Birdy, his latest effort, makes good use of samples from Bambook and Cari Golden ranging from the track Bird on a Wire to the all too familiar “I get deep” hook from Fatboy Slim’s Song For Shelter while supplying a synth-bass that is tight, round, and perfect for playing air piano. The real breadwinner on this number, however, is the choice of percussion: it’s crisp without sounding forced or too synthetic and the contrast between it and the much warmer bassline and synths give the track a rich sound. It will be interesting to see what Crooka has in store for us in 2015. Sign us up.
