Chris Kennedy, “Yo”

Chris Kennedy, a young DJ/producer that slowly worked his way into D.C.’s music scene while he was a student at the University of Maryland, has a lot of street credit having shared bills with artists like Skream, Tiga, and Waze & Odyssey. But he’s also a member of the Blisspop fam and our eyes light up like a Pall Mall in the mouth of a grandma from Boca Raton whenever one of our own unleashes a mammoth tune.

Yo,” the first of a series of originals from Kennedy, is a grand summary of what it’s like to witness one of his DJ sets or to talk to him about his influences: it’s eclectic; fiery; and has dimension. Laying down a magic carpet of synth pads for his bassline to fly on, the track glistens with peak hour intensity by putting an arpeggiated bell pattern front and center post-breakdown, allowing it the free will to reach for the sky like Icarus. However, unlike the fallen Greek, Kennedy manages to succeed in his goal as the track soars through sonic headspaces not unlike other contemporaries such as Maceo Plex, Lane 8, Dusky, or any of the talent from Perfect Driver. “Yo” is the type of track that defines expectations, so it’s safe to say we expect Chris Kennedy to be at the top of the D.C. game from here on out.
