For the diehard ravers and dance music aficionados, Carl Cox is one of the Crown Jewels of the Dance Music Dynasty. But for those of you out there who are unfamiliar with him, Cox has been in the game since the 1980s and is undoubtedly one of the most talented, most seasoned, and hardest working DJs in dance music history ranking with the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Pete Tong, and Tiesto. And while he may be more well known now for his multiple residencies across the world – including his much publicized return to Space in Ibiza this past summer – he still releases original material from time to time and it never disappoints.
“Time For House Music,” Cox’s newest track coming off Circus Recordings, is the kind of jacked house track that dance music enthusiasts have come to expect from Carl Cox. But that’s not to say that this track seems ordinary. In fact, this track masterfully stitches together elements of old school techno, ecstatic acid house, and a funky, island inspired beat that all comes together into a blissed out celebration of everything that is house music. Arpeggios and horn-like synth stabs are a nice flourish with the intoxicating beat presented here and, when the haunting ambience creeps its way into the groove a couple minutes in, the soundscape becomes an expansive and elaborate foray that expertly dives into good ol’ fashioned rave music. It’s as if Cox wants us to recall the glory days of abandoned warehouses and empty cornfields as a means of pulling those memories into the present in the hopes of leaving a place for those places in our future.
I just hope I can find my kandi bracelets when the time comes.
