The man is somewhat a mystery. His whereabouts are unknown and his identity safely contained. His music production, however, is a completely different story. I am talking about Moon Boots, a DJ/producer who took the disco world by storm last year with several tracks that caught worldwide attention. And now the momentum continues with the arrival of his first EP, “Aretha”, released today on Nurvous Records. Featuring a stellar house remix from Blisspop friend Kid Color, the original track shines through with a tropical yet soulful disco vibe that is destined for dance floor glory. Check out the EP below and then grab those tracks here.

Moon Boots – Aretha EP
Blisspop had a chance to catch up with Moon Boots and talk about mixtapes, producers on the rise and the new EP…
Much of your production relies on a combination of disco and R&B boogie. Were these genres big influences on you growing up? Do you enjoy listening to other genres as well?
I remember hearing things like “Love is the Message” and “I Found Lovin” at block parties as a kid, so maybe some of that influence crept in by osmosis. In general, it was much harder to discover this stuff when I was younger!
Even though I mostly listen to disco and house-based stuff, I still love all kinds of music — synth pop, soul, all kinds of rock, etc.
Your tracks, “Gopher It” and “Off My Mind” were consistently featured in mixes among fellow DJs/producers in 2011. Can you talk about the mixtape phenomena and how it’s changed/altered the ability to get your music out to the masses? Do you see yourself making mixes in 2012?
I think it’s great for producers and DJs alike for a lot of reasons. To name just one, people want to know what their favorite DJs are playing without having to trainspot tracks at a club! It also helps give producers more outlets for their tracks outside of sending them to blogs, for instance.
As for my own mixes, I’ve done one mix so far for CC Disco (listen and download here), and I plan on doing more in the near future!
Could you tell us about a couple DJ’s/producers/record labels we should look out for this year?
Maxxi Soundsystem and Disclosure have already put out amazing tracks in 2012, and I’m very excited to see what they do next. Goldroom and Psychemagik have been doing excellent stuff as well. I also think this will be a big year for the French Express family, including Perseus, Jonas Rathsman and Chris Malinchak.
You’ve got your first EP being released on January 31 through Nurvous Records which features remixes from Kid Color, Zimmer and ColeCo. Could you tell us about the process of making an EP and how you went about deciding which DJs/producers you wanted to work with?
They were all people I’d been in touch with recently and we were excited to work together. Zimmer and I did a remix trade — I have a remix of one of his tracks, “Bay Bridge” coming out soon on Discotexas. ColeCo’s been releasing great material and I hit them up as soon as I heard the Magician playing their track, “Can’t Stop.” Kid Color is a good friend as well as an excellent DJ/producer.
What else does Moon Boots have in store for 2012 ? How about a U.S. tour?
Many more new tracks! Some with vocalists, some with samples, and yes, a tour as well.
Do you own a pair of moon boots ? Ever consider adding them to your stage attire?
I have some, but no one could see them from a DJ booth anyways!
