IN THE MIX: DJ Provoke, “MOdERN CLASS Vol. 3”

Patrick Gordy, simply put, is an enigma of a human being. Much like other notable DJs in the game like James Murphy or Peanut Butter Wolf, Gordy spins because he’s a music nerd who loves moving a room to the beat of a different drum. As DJ Provoke, he has made the MOdERN CLASS parties in D.C. a hidden treasure for those seeking an alternative to the Dupont/U Street house scene that celebrates a forgone era of dance music: mostly vinyl; mainly groovy; and always soulful. Known for whipping out obscure gems that he’s collected over the years as a fervent crate digger, Gordy works the room in a way that can only be described as meticulous genius as he focuses on organic, back-to-basics vibes which never go out of style.

His latest mix in the MOdERN CLASS mix series has an onslaught of modern soul and boogie classics ranging from the slow burning “Midnight Special” by Psychic Mirrors to Moniquea’s 2-stepper “Casanova.” It’s a mix that’ll make you sweat like you’re wearing a polka dotted silk button-up and it’s slicker than the fleekest Jheri curls on the dancefloor.

Make sure you check out DJ Provoke this weekend when he opens for Tuxedo at U Street Music Hall.
