Each summer, we’re blessed with an epic EDM banger playing in your favorite DJ’s set, but we are currently living in Summer 2020 – a parallel universe void of nightlife. With festival season canceled and day parties nowhere in sight, it’s a real struggle to get excited about the “Song of the Summer.” However, I’ve stumbled upon a fitting soundtrack for days like this.
“House Arrest” is a throbbing single by SOFI TUKKER, a New York music duo, and in collaboration with Gorgon City, a German-American electro-pop duo. The single was released on May 15, a time in which a majority of the United States was shut down due to COVID-19. As an extrovert who frequents nightclubs and festivals, being stuck inside felt like torture. But this bouncy release added some much-needed relief.
From the moment it starts, the atmospheric vocals of Sophie Hawley-Weld captivate your ears. “House Arrest” starts off as a chill house track perfect for a lazy day inside, but in actuality it’s an EDM banger. Like most music lovers, I’m a sucker for “the drop.” And let me tell you, the atmospheric build-up followed by a chunky bass-driven drop is the perfect combo (peanut butter and jelly).
It’s refreshing to know that I’m not the only one obsessed with this song. The official music video released on July 10 and it was made with footage from fans around the world.
Bring on the Remix
This single is on heavy rotation in virtual DJ sets and receives frequent airplay on Diplo’s Revolution on SiriusXM Channel 52. While some states are facing “shutdown”, this song is gaining more momentum thanks to an official remix from Chris Lorenzo, a Birmingham, UK resident and Rinse FM host.
Normally, I stumble across new music via Instagram or YouTube, but lately Diplo’s Revolution has been killing the game. The remix swaps the 90s throbbing bass for chill house vibes. Dare I say, tropical house? Whenever I hear the remix, I begin to ponder thoughts of sipping on a Blue Hawaiian while relaxing on the beaches of Ibiza. Selfies optional.
The original and the remix are both wicked tracks that you can’t help but love – depends on the vibe you’re looking for.
