Over the past several years, an incredible boogie funk revival has been taking place, with acts such as DÄM-FunK, GL, The APX, and Silver Linings leading the charge. You can also add Finnish trio Beverly Girl to that list. Since 2014, they have released a string of addictive and funky singles, and the first single from their long-awaited new LP The Unstoppable Force (due in fall 2019), called “Talk About The Weather”, provides a fantastic start to a new era.
This track is a grooving, 80s R&B-inspired midtempo number with killer bass and synth lines that are faithful to the boogie funk aesthetic. These lines stand out while letting the sultry vocals of lead singer Yoanna Saarinen shine. One strong element of Beverly Girl’s music is the surprising key changes that appear right after the second verse, like the one that appears at 1:45 here. They always have creative melodies and take you by surprise in the best way possible, then ease right back into the chorus. It is such a clever songwriting trick, and a way to make a fantastic song even more enjoyable.
