Empire of the Sun’s breakthrough hit, We Are the People, has gotten countless remixes since its initial release in 2008 including treatments by Sub Focus, Tobtok, Dmitri Vegas, and Eric Prydz. Which is why whenever a new remix of the seminal electro-pop standard is released, one feels a sudden urge to roll their eyes. No eye rolling here. This recent remix treatment is exceptional.
On remix duty this go around is Vintage Culture: a DJ/Producer from Brazil who has wowed us before with remixes of Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, and Phil Collins. His signature style is on display – and on point – in this remix as it showcases an edgy, dubby bassline, celestial pads, and otherworldly arpeggios while maintaining the spaced out vocals and raw guitar progressions that made the original so approachable. In fact, EOTS frontman Luke Steele sounds almost more anthemic in this remix: a hard feat to accomplish seeing as the original We Are the People is a paean to begin with. This is extraordinarily brandished as the track comes to a climactic precipice during its sequence of builds and falls, especially when the beat drops into Steele’s croon and a barrage of heavy bass. Ladies and gentlemen: the bar has been raised.
