Blisspop contributor Phil Hafner, better known as his alter ego PHILCO, has been burning up Washington, D.C.’s underground scene for the past year or so with his DJ sets which are expertly curated, seamless, and masterfully executed. Generally new to the production game, his influences from labels like Hot Creations, Defected, and Turbo Recordings are without a doubt displayed in his original work. His latest remix, an edit of Katy B’s “5 AM,” is no exception to these characteristics as a tastemaker.
Circling around a minimalist bassline that drives the action through a foray of sharp snares and hi-hats, PHILCO’s remix ramps up the feels with uplifting piano stabs and a dazzling, thematic pad. And while Katy B’s original vocals are chopped up, the feeling is ever present and serves a very dramatic purpose as it generates energy that propels the track out of the speakers and into the soles of your shoes (which, to be fair, should be in a constant state of shuffling from the moment someone presses play on this track). This is the kind of sexy, pure, pool party magic we need as it starts to warm up outside and PHILCO knows just how to serve it.
