Luis Rodriguez, better known by his alias Lancaster, has been churning out fresh takes on Top 40 hits for a while now. With a style that primarily draws on disco and funk, his edits routinely deliver a forward thinking, old school flavor for modern listeners. His newest remix, a take on Trey Songz’ downtempo R&B hit “Na Na,” is a colloquy of sorts for this aesthetic which, in many ways, operates on a similar level to artists like Girl Talk or Super Mash Bros.
By blending classic disco beats, horns, and bass with Trey Songz’ vocals, this track becomes a contagiously frenetic, groovy powerhouse as opposed to the original’s bump and grind vibe. The highlight here is the masterful execution of blending each element in a manner that doesn’t undermine or overpower the other; the transition between the old school/new school is seamless thereby making this a dancefloor smasher that communicates on multiple levels.
