Kidnap Kid, “Moments”

There comes a time when a musician flexes in a way which spins them into a soundtrack for the beautiful or haunting periods we have in our lives. Last year, we saw it on records like Kölsch’s remix of “Cranes” or Lane 8’s take on Odesza’s “Bloom”: these became the backgrounds for countless memories which will pass through our minds like slides in a projector. This is how, even in a time dominated by the now digital process of songwriting, we are still capable of experiencing classics in the making or songs that overreach into the territory of timelessness.

Kidnap Kid, who has experimented with emotionally winding techno in the past on releases “Like You Used To” and his remix of Jessie Ware’s “You & I,” finds himself in a very comfortable patch of lovely, sunny, ambient soundscapes in “Moments.” With vocals by Leo Stannard, “Moments” is a love letter written in romantic, heart aching string sections and arpeggiated synths that glisten like twinkling light bulbs in a summer’s breeze. It’s a song built around the concept of literally constructing and embracing the moments which will define who we become and what we’ll look back on. The sheer concept of a song like this is a massive undertaking, but the fact he succeeds in creating an atmosphere which actually complements this grand scheme is outstanding.

Kidnap Kid’s “Moments” is now available alongside “Birds That Fly” anywhere music is sold.
