Grandiose pop infused with alternative stylings, Foreign Air doesn’t stray too far off the beaten path reserved for contemporary acts like Børns, Florence and the Machine, or alt-J. In a move that feels larger and more anthemic than their previous single, “Free Animal,” the Washington, D.C. based group goes with a ‘big drum, bigger feels’ approach on “In the Shadows.”
Gently blurring the lines between eery pop and the danceable alternative motifs we’ve learned to love over the past few years – like percolating guitar riffs and tribal percussion – “In the Shadows” draws inspiration from the dreamy echoes of moody bands of Rock and Roll’s past; it’s hard not to imagine this coming from anyone other than the children raised on years of New Order, Depeche Mode, or the poppier and less angry side of the Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan. In this way, Foreign Air’s latest offering is less cheesy than some other groups attempting to do the same epic brushstrokes with their auditory canvas (*cough* IMAGINE DRAGONS *cough*) and comes off as a sincere attempt to reach some kind of greater truth in both mind and soul.
