FOLD – Mr w00d EP

This month sees the homecoming of FOLD (Rob Glassett) for his sophomore EP on George Fitzgerald’s ManMakeMusic label. Rob’s 10 years of house production technique balances on his knack for precise sampling and creatively manipulating those samples to find hidden rhythm. That philosophy applies to his “B2 – No Foolin'” and title track “A1 – Mr W00D.” In comparison, both tracks display a strong understanding of how far subtle changes in a mix can work for sample-centric tracks – rich, a warm filter glides across the nylon guitar samples in “No Foolin'” and crunches the vocal loop in “Mr W00D” to its limits, in these particular cases. Though after extensive road testing of these tracks over the past month, I have to say the breadwinner and crowd-pleaser of this record belongs to the B1 slot, “Keif Chugwin” (an homage to UK television personality, Keith Chegwin). The synth stabs are downright gnarly and ripe in delay effects, the kicks drive through your gut like a jackhammer and the ragga sample just kinda catches you by surprise, which is pretty great too. I’ve been playing this one everywhere recently, all with the same reception: “what the hell is this one??”. FOLD’s Mr W00D EP seems to have gone a bit unnoticed, which is a shame as the 12″ is soon to hit stores this month. You should plan on grabbing a copy while it’s still under the radar and firmly locking it in your record bag. These are 3 bombs waiting to go off.
