Blisspop resident and DC favorite Baronhawk Poitier has released an absolute smasher of a track in his latest effort “Who Are You.”
There is clearly a lot of emotion behind the track, both in its instrumental construction and the vocal sample – excerpts from Jesse Jackson’s speech at the Wattstax music festival, which included the reciting of Reverend William H. Borders Sr.’s “I Am Somebody.”
On the back of the Freddie Gray riots in Baltimore he said to himself, “with so many conversations going on, so many ideas thrown about, so many statistics, I wanted to contribute to the conversation via music instead of just some hashtags and links to news stories. I’ve always wanted to do something with Jackson’s speech, it felt like the right time.”
And oh boy did he crush this one. Incorporating elements of Tribal and Minimal House with Techy dark synths and some tight percussion, its a powerful track that’s sure to make you move.
Baronhawk is one of my personal favorites to watch DJ, as he puts so much emotion and energy into his sets – not to mention his mix is silky smooth. The construction of “Who Are You” carries the same trademark.
This one is a definite look, and if you haven’t seen Baronhawk behind the decks, you are missing out.
