Coming off the massive Swerve compilation from Perfect Driver today is “Reflection”: a hard hitting, tech house banger from Copenhagen’s Alex Index.
Hand picked by label head Matthew Anthony and Mark Starr, the track blends the best of booty shaking bass and crisp percussion creating a driving force which bounces, breaks, and is wholly unstoppable. It’s the best of what tech house has to offer at the moment and its glued by a focus on refining the simpler aspects of a good house track – which sometimes goes overlooked nowadays in favor of flash or gimmicks. This is a notion present throughout the track as a learned man tells us that he is, in fact, reflection itself. Not quite on the nose, but still ribbing us nonetheless, as we mull over the cut’s awesomeness throughout.
This self-awareness, which can easily become kitsch, instead gives the track some much appreciated levity as the breaks grow to become more and more underground in nature, spiraling into after hours territory and minimalist bliss.
It’s a take on patience, on centering our energy on the things most important in musical composition, as the sample of the learned man is specifically placed at the head of each drop leading into new segues. Conscientious and specific, like a well-trained surgeon, “Reflection” is the kind of track that stands out on a compilation: a hard feat, in this case, seeing as the latest Swerve compilation also features heat from Perfect Driver homies like Knuckle Walkers, Nick Rockwell, and label head Matthew Anthony himself.
