On March 21st, DC became the center stage of two big events – one of the worst snow storms of the season and a DJ set by Mura Masa. The Grammy-nominated Mura Masa took the Flash stage with his friends Brooklyn-based “The Range†and DC-based “Indiginis.†Despite the weather conditions, promoter Nü Androids saw one of its largest crowds at Flash yet.
Alex Crossan, better known as “Mura Masa,†hails from the island of Guernsey between the English Channel, and is the first artist to be nominated for a Grammy as both a musician and creative director. His track “Love$ick†with A$AP Rocky topped the U.S. and U.K. Spotify viral charts, and he won the 2017 UK Music Video Award for Best Live Session. He has also collaborated with featured lyracists Bonzai, Charli XCX, Desiigner, Jamie Lidell, and Damon Albarn.
The DC-based Tibetan brothers “Indiginis†kicked off the night with remixes of tracks by Justin Bieber and Jack Ãœ, JAHKOY, Tragedy, Lemaitre, KOLAJ, and BLU J. Then “The Range†teared down the house with soulful collage of hip-hop, funk, techno, future bass, and disco — playing his new original “New Lots†and music from his documentary “Superimpose,†which depicts the stories behind the artists that he sampled for his sophomore album.
Just after midnight, Mura Masa entered the stage and kicked off his set with “Love$ick†followed by his second hit “What If I Go.” He also mixed in a number of different elements throughout the evening, from trance to techno to future bass, and included additional hits “Firefly,†“1 Night,†and “All Around the World.†The eclectic performer and fanny-pack model combined comedy, reflection, and karaoke to keep the crowd grooving until the snow stopped.
