Powel is a relatively new name to the production game. After a handful of releases on various German labels, the young Berlin-based producer joins the ranks on Fina Records for his latest EP, Cloud City. The collection hosts four distinctly different deep house groovers, all united by an effortless penchant for gorgeous melodies and a laid back approach to the genre. Opener “Cloud City” is aptly titled, focusing on swirling atmospherics to send you floating through a sea of lush pads and and bubbling synths. “Falling In A Black Hole” takes a more minimal approach; combining muted stabs and simple percussion with chiming synths and moody atmospherics, the track slowly builds into bursts of color that ultimately make this one of the most compelling songs on the EP. The B side features two more tracks that are well worth your while–“I’m Talking Slowly” has an old school vibe complete with lush string samples while “Getting Out” nearly crosses into the daytime disco territory.
