An Interview With Tobias Thimm of Tagteam Terror

Matthew Lipsit: Your name probably speaks for itself but is there a story behind it you’d like to share?

Tagteam Terror: It seems like our name would be a description of our sound but you won’t hear that much “terror” during our DJ sets nor our productions. As we started this project, we used a lot of EFX (effects) while mixing and especially worked a lot with the “roll-effect” on the Pioneer mixers. We still don’t like to just link one track after track, so a spark of truth remains but it’s more like our name is a relic from the past.

ML: “Two Guys – One Idea”. How did this all come about?

TTT: “One Idea” means the overlap of our musical taste – we don’t need to talk while we DJ. It’s blind trust and applies also for our productions. We totally agree about our sound and in which direction it should develop. Maybe that’s why we named ourselves as “Tagteam” in the beginning.

ML: I’ve noticed a healthy blend of French/electro house in your tracks. Artists like Go Go Bizkitt, Tensnake, and Treasure Fingers come to mind. Can you tell us about some of your influences (past and/or present)?

TTT: Drawing from influences like old school & French House, techno but also Hip-Hop; we got an affection for sample-based tracks. Labels like Roulé, Crydamoure and TRAX still have an influence on us and of course heroes like Daft Punk or Alan Braxe. Beside current tracks, we are still digging for some old school treasures.

Right now we really like the stuff from guys like Tensnake, Round Table Knights, and Homework. You will also find Djedjotronic, Keith & Supabeatz, or Gesaffelstein in our playlists.

ML: You guys have been busy pushing your own tracks while also making edits/remixes. Do you enjoy doing one more than the other? How do you keep a healthy balance while also touring?

TTT: We got no preference if it’s a remix or our own track. In the studio we are sometimes acting more like butchers than musicians – cuttin’, choppin’…the result is that our remixes often don’t use many stems from the original track. Of course it’s more free to work on our own tracks but after the first good idea for a remix, it often feels as good as if it were our own production.

Healthy balance? Well, we’ve been promoting parties for a long time now, touring, spending a lot time in the studio and sometimes studying – but honestly we can’t get enough and definitely have some more capacity.

ML: What record/album are you listening to right now?

TTT: Hercules & Love Affair – Blue Songs

ML: Any upcoming releases we should know about?

TTT: Our remix for Will Eastman & Micah Vellian is out now on every digital platform – definitely check that one out!  We are currently working on our upcoming Hold Up EP for Top Billin’ Records from Helsinki. Release is planned to be out this summer and features three tracks named “Hold Up”, “I Can’t Hold This Feeling Back” and “Shine”. You can preview two of them on our Soundcloud page. Also did remixes for Don Rimini, Is Tropical, and Autodidakt feat. Spoek Mathambo which should be out soon. And if everything works out, we can unveil some big news soon – watch out!

ML: Got any big touring plans for the summer? More specifically, when will you be bringing your dance party to the US?

TTT: We will be playing a lot of gigs in Germany over the next couple months and hopefully Ireland in June. Currently, we’re looking for a booking agency that will take care of our bookings in the US – we definitely want to come over and bring some TTT (TagTeamTerror) in the near future.
